The Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby, is the new home where the spacious galleries will now be displaying Soper Artwork. There will be permanent display of Soper work together with varying exhibitions and workshops. There are exciting plans for the enlargement of the existing facilities. All previously donated money has been passed to the gallery. All concerned are delighted and most grateful. Future donations will, of course, be very, very welcome and will go towards the exciting expansion plans.

Comments on the new home:

George Vestey: – “I am thrilled to learn that the wonderful Soper Collection has now found a permanent home at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby. I pay tribute to the dedication and determination of Joy Baker, with trustees Geoffrey Lindsey-Smith and Jane Gosling, in honouring the Collection with a final destination worthy of its story and if that place couldn’t be in Suffolk then, given the Soper family ties with Whitby, there could be no better alternative than the Pannett Art Gallery. The Soper Collection has brought joy and delight to so many of us in Suffolk, may it continue to do so for generations to come in its new home.”

Margaret Maybury,(middle back) Member for Waldingfield Ward, Cabinet Member for Communities: – “This exciting inclusive project will bring all sections of the community together to share their love, interest, education in and appreciation of art.  I support this venture and will be sharing the vision with all I meet.”

Robert Lindsay, (far right) County Cllr Lavenham Ward – “This is a project of considerable community benefit and should attract tourism, employment and will generally benefit the rural Suffolk economy as a whole.”

Cllr William Shropshire – “I offer my full support to this community engaging project to bring the art of the Soper family to life here in Suffolk. The Collection which has been amassed, painstakingly documented and offered to be displayed for the benefit of the public is a wonderful opportunity for our area. The displayed artwork will provide educational benefit and boost the economy, and be a fantastic tourist attraction complementing Gainsborough’s House and other art attractions already here. It will also ensure the survival of such an important Collection which brings our native wildlife and our beautiful English countryside to life in its depictions. We must all do what we can to support this venture.”

Comments on the new home:

Margaret Maybury, Suffolk District Councillor:  “Our hope for a local venue for The Soper Collection was not to be. However, a wonderful venue in Whitby, Pannett Art Gallery, has been achieved which echoes the empathy of Suffolk in its appreciation and aims for The Soper Collection. I look forward to the vision of a local opportunity keeping the links to The Soper Collection alive through a student bursary for a local young person from our wealth of educational establishments coming to fruition.”

Robert Lindsay, Suffolk County Councillor:  “I’m delighted that this valuable collection has found a home at the Pannett Art Gallery Whitby that will give it the care, the space and the imaginative public access that it so deserves.
George Soper has painted and engraved several Whitby scenes and though he and his two artist daughters lived in Hertfordshire their work applies to all who have an interest in the English Countryside, its ordinary working people and its bird and animal life.
The bird paintings and ceramics created by his daughters are already being used creatively by the Pannett in workshops to inspire children to come up with their own artworks.
Following the late John Baker’s passionate conviction and the formation of the important collection and hunt for a suitable home , it is wonderful to know that we at last have a happy ending for that story.”

Will Shropshire - The Soper ColletionWilliam Shropshire:  “I am delighted to hear that The Soper Collection has found a permanent home to allow the wider public to enjoy the wonderful array of paintings, sketches and models that the family produced. I am also extremely excited to hear that there is the possibility of retaining some element of the artistic works and relationship locally here in Suffolk with the opportunity to create a studentship. I believe such an opportunity is vital to maintaining those links and encourage you to support in any way you can to make it a success.”

Philip Faircloth-MuttonPhilip Faircloth-Mutton, Suffolk County Councillor: “The Soper collection is timeless, just like the British countryside and wildlife which is at its heart. This timeless nature lends itself so perfectly to a hoped-for annual scholarship that future generations of Suffolk’s young people can enjoy for years to come.”

Please consider donating to The Soper Collection to enhance the opportunities for public benefit which are being created at Pannett Art Gallery.

Do please tell anyone who you think might like to see the glorious artwork being exhibited.

All further donations will enable the artwork of the Soper Family to be taken to heart by the public now and by the children and adults of the forthcoming generations.
